A college student, full time employee, daughter, family member and a friend. These are just a few of my titles as me Maeve. My life is about as exciting as a turtle race, thus not that interesting. I'm writing this not only because it's due in the morning but because I want to give you a little insight on who I am and what I do. My days begin with about ten alarms, followed by little motivational notes I write myself to ensure a great day. As you can probably tell by the fact I have to set about ten alarms, I'm an extremely heavy sleeper. Once I roll out of bed I pack my work clothes up in my purse throw on some clothes and head out to my classes, usually stopping for coffee on the way. After arriving to DCCC for my morning math and English I head on into Brick and Brew where I'm a full time employee. I always stop for another coffee and possibly a breakfast to prepare myself for a long day in the life of Maeve. As I set up the restaurant with other servers we blast our favorite tunes, most likely summer hits of the 2000's because who doesn't love a good throw back. As we approach 11:30 we open our doors to the public, my favorite part of the day. I love getting to know all of my tables and enjoy learning a little from each person I get to talk to throughout the day. After a long day at work I'll usually come home to watch some Netflix or get schoolwork done. Pondering what my next move is I check my phone for classes that I can attend at the gym I go to. As I throw on my athletic wear I get extremely excited and dart out the door to get in a good workout, post workout I usually grab a bite to eat and head home. I hop I'm the shower and get ready to do it all again, a day in the life of me.

.In the past couple of months there has been serious controversy on Trump "trumping Hillary in the election". Although Mr. trump creates havoc between two parties of people I believe that he is indeed able to run our country. I have little to no respect for those rioting over trumps win, they are no better then him. They are taking protesting to a new level threatening they they're going to burn and destroy companies. After Trump was elected a group of liberal rioters smashed and ruined a Starbucks storefront, clearly unknowing that Starbucks is the most liberal company in the entire world! The hate has to stop and it isn't coming from our president, it's coming from the people in low income areas attempting to make a change by destroying business and personal items of those around them. In reality nothing is going to change unless those who want or need change create a respectful way of going about it. I feel that anything is possible when you take the proper steps and with Trump as president I believe that there will be change, weather good or bad I can not predict the future. The next four years are going to be interesting to say the least in regards to the plethora of issues that America has at this point in time I am alarmed. I think that Trump is going to address several of them one step at a time and hopefully create a country that is economically strong again as well as hate and crime free. We all strive for the same thing, wealth, happiness and good health. Everyone is human so people need to begin to act human, regardless of your gender or ethnicity. Americans are too caught up in arguing with one another over politics that they don't even realize the horror going on beneath our feet. Trump is not a dictator, America is not going to shit, you have a decent life considering you're not living in a country with absolutely no rights. My theory is be thankful for what you have because you never know when you're going to loose it. Be thankful we have the right to vote, be thankful for a president that isn't mass murdering his people, be thankful you live in an area where you are provided food and shelter if you're homeless. It's as simple as that, spread peace throughout and be thankful, even if it's hard for you.
Chef's Table: Francis Mallman.
This episode of Chef's Table fits into narrative mode because Francis is telling his story through picture and sound. The way Francis tells his story intrigues you and makes you want to know more about him. In the beginning of the episode they show Francis' "home" where he grew up, throughout we realize that he's constantly traveling and just attempting to "go home" through his dishes. Every time he cooks he shows his talent, he plates everything to perfection, attempting to rewind to the time he first went to a fancy dinner with his parents in Patagonia. He dropped out of school at age thirteen and decided to pursue his dream in the food industry, he moved to France and learned the art from fellow three star restaurant chefs. Francis soon moved and opened his first restaurant at age nineteen. This is where he began to become famous for his food, one day a sought after man spoke to Francis after a meal and decided to tell him he didn't enjoy it, that's when Francis became one with his dishes. Instead of emulating others he needed his own way, that's exactly what he did. He began cooking to find his happiness, through this I believe that he cooked to feel at home. Francis cooks in the open air con MAESTRANZA-- a word derived from Spanish meaning those around you. This is huge for him considering that these people he cooks with every day are a huge part of his life, unlike his actual family that he only see's a couple times a year. He creates wonderful chefs out of those who lack experience and then leaves them on their own. This is similar to themes in our English class, creating our story and eventually moving on. We're creating a story in our class as Mallman is creating a story in his work environment. I would suggest checking out this story if you haven't because he's a very interesting man with an intriguing story. Well. Do yourselves a favor, don't watch this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUj2YZ21cEE To compose my project I worked with several online resources as well as Immigrants themselves. I really enjoyed this approach because I learned a lot about illegal immigration as well as legal, it really opens your eyes to the lives others live. I really struggled taking a side on my argument, every source I would go to I would change my mind after reading others articles. This is a huge problem because if you're rebutting your own argument the whole paper you're defeating the whole point of the essay. I wrote this paper a couple days before it was due, I believe that this is the best way to write the paper. When I first sat down early in the morning I was struggling to start and get my thoughts together. I began to write nothing but non-sense. I stopped writing for a couple hours, went to lunch with some friends and came back feeling strong. I think that a little time to collect your thoughts and clear your mind always helps you preform better. I choose to write about immigration for a few reasons, I thoroughly enjoy researching it, I live with a legal immigrant as well as work or worked with others. Recently a friend of mine was held by INS and questioned, we still haven't heard what's going to happen.
By just talking to people you learn more then researchers and statistics can show. If I continue my film based essay I can improve it and adapt it by adding several instances where people have been taken out of their homes by INS as well as terrorist attacks, I think that it will really open up peoples eyes, many of these immigrants are just coming for better lives. My current six step plan has been efficient for me and I am going to continue following it. America is breeding ground for immigrants, both legal and illegal, everyone wants a taste of the home of the brave. This is why we are slowing becoming overpopulated and jobless! Since 2008 immigration has become a huge issue in our society, causing some who come here legally take advantage of our government system, collect welfare and not contribute to society. Unlike the illegal immigrants that take our jobs and don’t pay taxes, kudos to them, at least they work hard for the little money they earn. Although this is an issue, I still believe that everyone deserves a chance to live a happy, healthy life and think that the United States should help those in need and allow legal immigrants to enter our country as long as they are willing to contribute to our society. I am aware that it’s a terribly long uncomfortable process to enter the United States but in reality it has to be. Many people don’t realize the threat that immigrants cause to society, possible disease and even terrorist attacks can be linked to those attempting to enter America. Many citizens don’t realize the length that some people go to just enter the US illegally. After speaking to several illegal immigrants I’ve realized that the process of coming illegally is just as hard as entering legally except with more risk. In reality those who enter our country illegally are just trying to flee theirs as quick as possible, due to several different reasons. These reasons range anywhere from criminals attempting to escape to parents looking for better lives for their children. Some illegal immigrants pay up to $200,000 USD to get guards at border control to turn their backs so that they can have a plethora of aliens enter the USA. By denying immigrants we are just opening up doors to potential black markets for actual criminals illegally transferring people into the US as a source of untaxed income. By allowing this we our country will slowly but surely become the land of the unknown people, those who are undocumented with no real identity. This could lead to serious issues, considering the government has no real security system for aliens. As shown on several reliable news channels, european countries have succumb to several terror attacks. As you know, the EU has little to no border control at all terrorists can freely travel throughout making attacks easily accessible in those areas. Statistics show that six out of every ten farm workers are illegal immigrants working for little to nothing, as awful as this is, these are the people keeping living cost low. Companies thrive off immigrants, this is where they’re saving money, as unfortunate as it is. In our country we need to allow immigrants, it’s only right considering we are a land where people can find safety and comfort. Women and children in third world countries are suffering painfully and potentially dying due to the horrid ways of their rulers. We need to find a way that helps those in need as well as keeping American citizens happy. Applicants should most definitely have a background check, be fingerprinted, tested and questioned. Although this is a lot of information to obtain the US needs to find a way to quickly and efficiently get through the applicants if they’re currently in bad situations. In reality many are chanting “build the wall” and claiming immigrants are raping our women and children. This is nonsense made up by the media and closed minded citizens. I understand fully why many of these people do not want to allow any immigration at all, but in all seriousness they’re being selfish. Immigrants may be taking our jobs but that’s because they’re working hard for them. They may be collecting welfare, but they earned citizenship legally for it. Many immigrants own companies, build homes, work in factories, some are even nurses and cops. I know for a fact that many immigrants are a large part of american society. My step-dad, a hard working cop who doubles as a nurse in his free time not only commits to saving lives daily, he pays taxes and contributes to society in many other ways as well. Not all immigrants are rapist, criminals stealing our jobs and money. Immigrants are a plethora of people looking for happiness and a new life. They don’t live like us, most come from little to nothing, American people need to give them a chance. We judge other countries for treating people in awful ways nut in reality we do the same by not letting those in need into our country. There should be no ban on entering the United States as long as you pass the essentials you should be able to live throughout the country. Make America Great Again, create a system where immigrants can freely come into the country without worrying INS is going to show up at their door and hold them in a cell. Give immigrants the chance to a better life, one that we all know is possible to live. Educate them and help them prosper into a wonderful addition to our society! http://www.history.com/topics/u-s-immigration-before-1965 http://www.teenink.com/opinion/all/article/42993/Legal-Vs-Illegal-Immigration/ https://www.uscis.gov/policymanual/HTML/PolicyManual-Volume12-PartB-Chapter2.html I think that our assignment should be based around terrorist attacks not only in the USA but across the world. Now more than ever the youth needs to expand their knowledge on attacks and possible reasons behind them. The film helped me realize that I don't know enough about foreign relations. I question where we keep troops, what they are doing and how is our country keeping others including our citizens safe. The purpose for this is solely to increase intelligence and knowledge of an extremely important topic. Anyone can read into it it's important enough to strike the eyes of all people, if you're educated past middle school you're pretty much able to comprehend the importance of the subject. I think that focusing on the middle east would be beneficial because of all the new information we will be able to find. Style of the paper should be informative and entertaining , it should educate those while keeping them interested. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3247714/
The film Survivor, written by Phillip Shelby, a Washington D.C. legend Kate Abbott flies over seas to London's embassy. Little does she know that in this eventful, crazy movie, she would be framed for murder and considered a traitor to the government. Kate is followed throughout the movie by the worlds best assassin, attempting to kill her every chance he gets. As she gets close to cracking the case she is forced to flee London with little to no chance of living if she doesn't get back to the USA. She hops on the plane, with luck forges a fake passport and makes it to NYC with little to no time to spare. Bill Talbot, the man Kate is after makes it to the United States with plans to attack a major city, as she is a professional in terrorist, the man is stopped and Kate makes out as the hero. A couple of meaningful quotes from the movie are shown below "The fire works in Dubai... that was you, wasn't it?" "[stabs him in the ear] You shouldn't have asked about that thing in Dubai [he then kills Trevor]" This is important because it shows how ruthless the movies characters are. " I've been waiting ten years for this : for what they did to my wife " This quote shows the reason for the conflict in the film. SAM TO KATE "I've always liked your instincts" This quote shows the only person to trust Kate is Sam, after Sam is killed no one is there to trust her good instincts. The film could've used better actors, been a little less cheesy and had more realistic film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5895028/
Above you can check out a link from a cool movie that I believe everyone in class should watch. This film sheds light on a sensitive topic in todays world, one that is currently tearing our country apart piece by piece. It is an amazing documentary taking 150 years of America creating an amazing story through past photography and present voices. It is an Oscar nominated film that explores not only race but high rates of incarnation in the land of the free. The movie is named after our great thirteenth amendment that abolished slavery, but unfortunately did not abolish the hatred and racism that came along with it. Writing topics that come along with this film are endless, you can explore past America, present day America or even both. Comparing an contrasting the difference from then and now. Enjoy researching about our world, people think they know what's going on but in reality they just repeat what they hear from others. Look beyond the media, do your own research, visit different prisons and get peoples stories. This project could have so much potential if we watched this movie. We could learn a lot about our government system as well as those who may be innocent whom are in prison. Once again the possibilities are endless and somewhat exciting as well as concerning In my academic mindset draft I worked with a couple of good friends, who helped me proofread and find sources for my project. In my opinion it was a good approach because the more sources the more information you can archive in your brain. Plus other people are learning from your assignments as well. The most difficult part of my process was actually getting started, I couldn't think of how to begin my paper. I overcame this by having a cup of coffee taking a break for a couple of good songs and starting on a fresh canvas. This was super helpful. I wrote this project semi last minute, after realizing it was due Thursday night while on my flight. This was a good approach because I really got other peoples opinions on it, the woman sitting next to me was a teacher who studied the mind body and soul. In all honesty I learned a lot from just speaking with her about the project and am excited to look more into the sources she provided me. I could've planned ahead a little better but then again I probably would have never sparked up a conversation with the woman next to me who really did help a tremendous amount when it came down to choosing my topic.
SIX NEW STEPS - RESEARCH : I all honesty Ithink by researching something slightly off topic can definitely help you writing your paper as well as gaining more information to use in the future -TALK TO PEOPLE :Sometimes strangers know a lot more then you think, consider sparking up a conversation with someone you're near. You never know it might be worth it in the long run. -BUDDY SYSTEM : Friends are there to help you grow as an individual help each other out keep one another focused and work together to research awesome things. -WHEN IN DOUBT CHILL OUT : If you're stuck on something come back to it, you'll write a whole lot better with an open, clear mind. - ENJOY THE PROCESS : Don't rush through your paper, just write and let it all flow out. -DONT STRESS OUT : The more you worry about it the worse your writing is, google is your friend. Use it to your advantage. |
